华东理工大学生物反应器工程与生物技术学院国家重点实验室在高影响力的专业学术期刊Nature Biotechnology发表了题为High-yield porphyrin production through metabolic engineering and biocatalysis的文章，科学家们开发了一种将球孢菌衍生的细胞工厂和酶催化相结合的高效生产卟啉化合物的方法。筛选并改造球形乳杆菌，使其成为一种高效的微生物细胞工厂，能够产生细胞外游离CPIII。通过使用发酵获得的CPIII，通过酶催化合成了各种金属卟啉。在整个过程中，科研工作者采用高通量（HTP）方法通过CPIII依赖途径设计和筛选负责血红素生物合成的关键酶。通过这种方法，在生物反应器系统中实现了高血红素和锌CPIII滴度，这表明了成本效益高、大规模生物生产血红素和其他增值卟啉的可能性。
